Dental Bonding
Hey, do you have a little chip or discoloration on your teeth that is bothering you? Do you hate the look of metal fillings? Dental bonding may work for you.
What is it anyway? Dental bonding is when a tooth colored resin is applied to the teeth and hardened with a special light. It can be used to fill cavities, repair chips and cracks, close gaps between teeth, and cover discolorations.
The good news is that no anesthesia is necessary unless it is used to as a filling. The surface of the tooth is roughened and then a conditioning solution is applied. After that a tooth colored resin is applied, molded and smoothed. Then comes the light show. A laser or an ultraviolet light hardens the resin.
Once the hardening is complete, you dentist can continue to mold the bond into its final shape. The last step is polishing. Voila! A beautiful new smile in thirty to sixty minutes per tooth.
It is the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedure, costing from one to four hundred dollars per tooth. Much less enamel is removed from your own teeth unlike crown preparation. It is relatively pain free, very important to the scaredy cats among us. Anesthesia is only used when repairing a cavity is involved.
There are a few disadvantages and some dentists only use it for small cosmetic changes or in low bite pressure areas like the front teeth. It is a little less stain resistant than porcelain crowns.
With good dental hygiene, your bonding should last from three to ten years. Listen up though, you pen chewers, nail biters, and ice crunchers. You cannot use your bonded teeth for any of these things or as a bottle opener. They will chip, so just use them to eat or nibble the neck of your significant other.
Follow these steps and your new smile will last you a long time.
